7 providers in Germany, Singapore, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, compared on 10 criteria from public documents. Smallest box: EUR 87.50 to EUR 1,158.38 a year, incl. VAT where stated. The order follows a fixed points formula; commercial relationships play no part.
Public documents as of 30 September 2026; price basis and apps as of 1 October 2026; customer inspection right as of 11 October 2026 · How the points are calculated
Positions result solely from a fixed scoring formula (methodology v1.3). Main parameters and their weight in points: Security and insurance 40, Costs 30, Access 30 (100 in total); the individual criteria are shown in the table and in the methodology. The basis is the providers' publicly available documents (as of 30 September 2026; price basis and apps as of 1 October 2026). Information not found there scores 0; providers are asked to supplement it, and confirmed information is included in the monthly update. Positions cannot be bought: offbnk's business relationships with providers are labelled and are not part of the scoring. The ranking is not investment advice or a recommendation of a provider. * Links marked with an asterisk lead to providers that pay offbnk an affiliate commission if you become a customer through the link or with an offbnk voucher code. This has no effect on inclusion, points or order.

A safe deposit box is the simplest form of storage: you rent space in a vault and keep whatever you like in it yourself. The provider only rents out the box. That gives you privacy but shifts much of the proof and insurance to you.
How it works
You choose a box size and sign a rental agreement. The provider generally does not check or record what you put in the box. You have access during opening hours or by appointment, usually with your own key and an identity check.
The rent is a fixed amount per year or month that depends on the box size, not on the value of the contents. That makes boxes economical for larger holdings in particular. There is no delivery: you collect the contents yourself.
Insurance is the decisive point
Because the provider does not know the contents, they are insured only up to a contractual sum and only against certain risks. Higher values often need additional insurance and proof in the event of a claim. Simple theft and mysterious disappearance are frequently not covered.
The differences are large. At Geiger Edelmetalle the rent includes no contents insurance; cover can be taken out through Allianz. Swiss Gold Safe states basic cover for physical loss or damage in Liechtenstein, which can be extended to all-risks cover. At pro aurum in Germany, fire, burglary, vandalism during burglary and robbery on the premises are insured.
The three best-placed options
How the three options with the most points in this ranking handle the safe deposit box.
Boxes at Schloss Güldengossa and in Brainkofen, from EUR 87.50 a year. The rent includes no contents insurance; cover is available through Allianz. If a key is lost, the box is opened in the presence of a notary at the renter's cost.
Boxes in Schaan in eight sizes, with annual rent from CHF 513.50 to CHF 8,107.50 including VAT. Lloyd's of London is named as insurer. Additional visits cost CHF 85 an hour; outside opening hours a further CHF 250 an hour applies, each plus VAT.
Boxes at eleven locations in Germany, including Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart, for EUR 214.20 to EUR 714 a year including VAT. Fire, burglary, vandalism during burglary and robbery are insured. Notice is four weeks by registered letter.
